Our most popular course - you will start with a freshly cut log, a mallet and some gouges, and at the end of the two days you’ll be going home with a large wooden bowl that you’ve made with your own hands.
By the end of this course you’ll have learned a complete ‘tree to product’ process, from selecting wood ready to turn, to making small items for the kitchen and garden, including spatulas, candlesticks, rolling-pins and dibbers.
Making a stool will introduce you to a good variety of skills - cleaving, using the drawknife and spokeshave, basic pole lathing, boring holes and weaving a hemp seat.
Carving your very own garden totem pole using the drawknife and carving gouges is immensely satisfying and fun, whatever the design that you come up with. The poles that you carve will fit into the back of a car for transport home.
This frame basket course has been developed by Malcolm Seal. During the course you will learn the basic skills involved - using knifes, selecting and preparing materials, bending and shaping hoops and ribs, and weaving a willow trug to completion.
This course is led by local artist Veronica Hudson. We will show you how to make your own artist’s charcoal from local willow before learning mark-making techniques to explore the possibilities of charcoal and its versatility as a learning medium.
These courses are for one child (10 years+) and one accompanying adult. You will be introduced to Green woodworking techniques such as cleaving a fresh log, side axe, drawknife, shaving horse and pole lathes. By the end of the day you should expect to go away with a few small items each.
This course is intended for guests who have already attended one of our green woodworking pole lathe or footstool courses, or those that have similar green woodworking experience.Over the five days you will make a shaving horse and a pole lathe that can be dismantled and taken with you at the end of the course. Time permitting, there may be the opportunity to use your new equipment to make some additional items as well, and to hone your turning skills. The design of the pole lathe is using a bungee for the return mechanism (the same principle as the 10 lathes that we use for our courses). This system makes them more portable and enables them to be dismantled and stored at home. The shaving horses have removable legs for the same reason. The Master-Class offers an opportunity to get a more in-depth understanding of green woodworking than our shorter courses and spending five days in the woods is an even more relaxing escape than the short courses.
